Opacity is neither an image nor an NSImageView property, it's applied when the image is drawn (unless the image itself has some inherent transparency). There's nothing in the posted code that would affect this, so the problem is coming from somewhere else. One possibility is the state of the current context when the NSImageView draws.
To eliminate the transformer, what happens if you just load the image straight into the image view?
(BTW, there's no such class as NSImageWell)
