Menu item binding hidden

Binding a menuitem's hidden attribute to the selection doesn't work in the case of a context menu because the selection happens as it changes and before the menu is displayed. There is no state. Other than adding an ivar and binding the hidden state to it, is there another way? Can't seem to find anything via a search.
