as opposed to:
// works fine
NSImage *source = [[NSImage alloc] initWithContentsOfFile: filename];
NSSize size = [source size];
[source lockFocus];
NSBitmapImageRep *image = [[NSBitmapImageRep alloc] initWithFocusedViewRect:
NSMakeRect(0.0, 0.0, size.width, size.height)];
[source unlockFocus];
// OpenGL commands
