You just want to be told when something that matters changes. Once you've received a notification, I think you'll simply want to examine the visibleRect of topView. Basically, if I understand correctly, you'll want to position the button view at the top of the visibleRect, and the image view in the rest of the visibleRect, and also handle the edge cases where there isn't enough room to show those subviews.
