I tried one last time, setting my toolbar in pure code. I started from the SimpleToolbar sample that comes with the XCode tools. And it works! There's a remaining bug: the label positions are wrong in the toolbar customization palette.

The NSToolbarItemGroup Class Reference is right, but could have some images to make it clearer.
