Noise in CALayer

I'm playing with cover flow in one of my apps with the "CovertFlow" sample code from apple (http://www.letscocoa.com/CovertFlow.zip)
However, sometimes i see a weird noise kinda thing in the shadows, here is a snapshot:

Any idea what might be going wrong?
