This is really a question for the xcode-users list, but anyway, you must use Xcode 2.5 to convert pbxproj bundles to xcodeproj bundles. Xcode 2.5 was intended for Tiger and Leopard; it works under Snow Leopard but not very well (it is not supported, and might crash at some point or another).
