NSFileManager, etc. Right?

Since there are several ways to hide a file, I don't think FSGetCatalogInfo will necessarily tell you if a file is invisible. The right way (before 10.6, anyway) is to use LSCopyItemAttribute with the attribute kLSItemExtensionIsHidden. -- James W.
