Sometimes.

    [NSString stringWithString: @"Foobar"];
    [NSNumber numberWithInt: 7];

Typically returns an object that is not auto-released, nor something you need to worry about releasing.

Note that [NSNumber numberWithInt: 42]; *does* release an auto-released object (and you still don't need to worry about releasing).
