iOS: erratic compass behaviour

  • Subject: iOS: erratic compass behaviour

hello,

I spent all day getting some AR app done and used the CLLocationManager's heading and the CMMotionManager a lot. then in the evening the compass freaked out, not only in my app, also the built in Compass.app, which would be sometimes correct, but most of the time between 20 an 180° degrees off and it would jump between different values when I hold the device still.
what could be the reason for that? overheating? overload? is there anything i can do to avoid that? I hope the thing will work again tomorrow, I just borrowed it for this job...

thanks and regards,
sebastian mecklenburg

p.s.: a real compass works fine, so there shouldn't be any strong magnetic interfering fields or so...
p.p.s.: iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iOS SDK 4.1 on iMac_______________________________________________
