Is all this creation and moving happening on a local disk or a remote one? I did experience some weirdness with NSFileManager's copyItemAtPath:toPath:error: when copying to AFP-mounted volumes. Never had the chance (figuratively and literally from what you're saying) of using moveItemAtPath:toPath:error: ….
