I'm coming around to the idea that your solution is the right one. However, in this case, I'm still baffled by the cause. The local files involved are a mix of .pages, .pdf, and possibly .rtf, so redirect doesn't seem to account for it.
(Hmmm. I wonder if one of the structured document types does a multi-step load...?)
