It is just BSD sockets ... get the book. It is: UNIX Network Programming by Richard Stevens
We turned an iPhone into a custom HTTP web server that we made from scratch (using BSD sockets and TCP/IP) and it worked! ... so it is possible, especially if you like to roll your own.
