HICocoaView and iTunes

What's the current state of play regarding HICocoaView and so on? I'm looking to update an older iTunes visualizer project, which is written in C++ and uses Carbon APIs exclusively. iTunes is still a Carbon app isn't it? If that's still the case, what's the recommended way to allow the graphic aspects of the visualizer plugin to be created using NSView and CALayer? My older plug-in is still loaded and mostly runs (some problems were introduced by iTunes 10.x however) but I'd like to really modernise it.
