OK, great. In that case it's weird that your cut/copy/paste items are not enabled while a text field in your dialog has focus. You have focus set in one of your text fields / views, right?

Not sure what you mean with "not using the main app menu system"? I'd argue that it should be, and that you should be using regular first responder based menu item validation for making sure that only the menu items that make sense are enabled during your modal session (again something that typically works without any additional work on your part).
