toolbars & toolbar items in lion

NSToolbarSeparatorItem & NSToolbarCustomizeToolbarItem seem broken in xcode 4.1. I used to be able to add these without a problem previously but now I get errors saying: "The toolbar item with object ID 654 was not in the allowed items list of the toolbar with object ID 651. It has been re-added to the allowed items list. The toolbar item with object ID 658 was not in the allowed items list of the toolbar with object ID 651. It has been re-added to the allowed items list." If it is re-added, why doesn't it work? Do I have to now add these in code? I have tried to search the literature to no avail. What am I missing?
