Are you sure you are _not_ calling drawRect yourself, but let the system call it when needed?
If a view needs to be redrawn, the system sets up the correct graphics context, coordinate system transformations etc. and then calls drawRect. If you call drawRect yourself (what you should never do!), you end up drawing into "somewhere".
