Thanks for your explanations. This has really been very helpful. As a result of what I have learned so far, I decided to change my design again by instantiating the view controllers in IB and targeting the action messages here as well; while loading the actual view objects in code. I realize this is just one of a few possible approaches, but for now this seems to suit my needs the best.
