Display Letterboxing Pillarboxing

  • Subject: Display Letterboxing Pillarboxing

In System Preferences a user may select a specific display resolution.

Some display resolutions will stretch the visible area to fill the display as needed. But some display resolutions will pillarbox where a black bar is placed on the left and right of the visible area.

Is it possible to programmatically detect when the current display resolution is letterboxing or pillarboxing?

The Quartz Display Services Reference does not seem to have any functions that reveal this information.
