I 'll definetly dig into that as soon as I am done with core GUI stuff (need to get my app working for a -prototype demo)...I was trying to add a quick touch of animation so that my demo would look cooler and just thought that it might be possible to do it with NSView calls without using layers, I mean, using the animator. I'll go through the Core Animation Guide to get a better handle on CALayer, etc.
I don't know how well animator-based animation melds with layer-based animation, especially on Mac OS X where NSView and CALayer spend most of their time glowering at each other angrily over the fence. :) Things are different in iOS where the whole framework was built up from scratch and UIView and CALayer are integrated completely (a UIView is just a CALayer plus touches, as someone has said). But in general my view is: don't be afraid of Core Animation. It is not difficult and it puts the power directly into your hands.
