Setting the selection of an array controller?

I have an array controller associated with a set of objects that appear in a custom view. When the user selects one or more of those objects, I want the array controller selection to change appropriately, so that my inspector can then update accordingly.
I've got examples working where the selection is managed by Cocoa, but I don't know how to set it myself.
What should I be looking for in the literature on the subject?
