I experienced the exact same symptoms as the OP when trying to open more than just a handful of .png files at once (NONE of which were downloaded from the internet, but created in Photoshop). Perhaps after some number of files is exceeded, the behavior changes? It worked fine when I opened just a few of them at a time.
