Application Menu

I am trying to change the name of the application menu (terminology?). I have subclassed NSApplication and in its awakeFromNIb I setTitle on the IBOutlet NSMenuItem that is connected to this menu.

It does not change. Can this be done? If so, where?  I have also tried to setTitle in the app delegate applicationDidFinshLaunching.
