I'll look at the NSAccessibility protocol and read the Accessibility Programming Guidelines. If there are any other documents in particular I should be reading, let me know

Well, I, and many users, even though we have functioning two hands, would really like to be able to access Status Items without using the mouse. Unfortunately, the built-in F8 keyboard shortcut to "Focus on Status Items" only cycles through the *Apple* status items. (Filed a few weeks ago: Apple Bug ID #10122120).
