If LS recorded the last UTI it detected for a file, we’d get the wrong UTI getting recorded in the MATLAB vs. Xcode case, and then the end-user would have to fiddle around with stuff that he/she really shouldn’t have to know about just to get the file to open.
I maintain that the better solution is for LS to keep both options open in the case of a conflict. Instead of guessing one or another, internally consider it something like “either public.objective-c-source or com.matlab.whatever” and offer the file to any application that accepts either with the UTI appropriate for that app.
