Ah! Now I remember that a few months ago I got a hot tip to set this default globally, to make apps easier to troubleshoot.
	defaults write -g NSApplicationShowExceptions YES
That explains why it works for me.

This seems like something that would be good to enable in one's own apps. That can be done by registering it at launch time via the registerDefaults: method as Corbin says above.
