Debugging a spotlight importer problem

I have a spotlight importer that works just fine when I run mdimport from the command line, but it fails with a sig11 when it runs automatically.

I've tested it on two machines under 10.7 and 10.8, with the same results.

Can anyone give any tips on how to debug this situation?
