Well, I thought this was a simple auto-layout problem. As it turns out, it is a bug. I have filed a bug report - rdar://12888108
However, there is a workaround for this bug. The NSView which is a parent to the NSButton needs to be a subclass of NSView with at least a -drawRect: method.
