You can call the method at any time, but you'd probably just call it from your gesture handler which will fire for UIGestureRecognizerStateChanged as the touch moves. I'd suggest reading up on UIGestureRecognizer. It's a valuable class. Event Handling Guide for iOS: Gesture Recognizers
