Where are temporary documents stored until saved?

Wow, Googling for this is hard.

I've got a problem that prevents me from closing a document in my OS X app. Unfortunately, each time I re-launch, the same docs open, with all the data they contained before. I just want to delete these documents. For that matter, I'd rather they didn't auto-save at all during development (or auto-restore, or whatever the terminology is).

I can't figure out where the temporary state is stored so I can delete it before re-launching. Can anyone tell me?

Thanks!
