Really? Well, OK.

I can't find any documentation that says so, just a couple of inconclusive hints. I think the question of what's documented as the API contract is important, because one of the issues in this thread is the [possible] difference between what's reasonable/conventional/expected equality behavior, and what's actually required by the API contract.
