Recommended way to present a font preference

  • Subject: Recommended way to present a font preference

I'm rewriting an existing Carbon application with Cocoa, and am working on the preferences. One preference that the user should be able to set is a default font and size for text display. In the Carbon app, there is a pop-up button with a font menu, and a combo box for the size. This doesn't seem to be the way to do it in Cocoa, as getting a font menu pop-up is not a standard thing as it was in Carbon.

So, what is the preferred way to present such a preference option? Xcode itself seems to have a text field which is selectable but not editable containing the font name and size, with a non-standard button on the right end of, and within, the text field to bring up the font panel. Is that a good option? If so, should I try to imitate the non-standard button, or do it differently using standard controls? Or what other options are there for this?

Thanks for any suggestions,
John
