Thanks for the reply, I will send my question to the performance-dev list.

The problem is the same with a malloc array--I found it there first (in some old code that once ran OK) and then wrote the simple test routine to see if my suspicions bore out.

Thanks for your reply also.

I ran the test under OS 10.6.8 /  Xcode version 3.2.3. It would appear that I may be now forced to upgrade.
