NSTableViewDraggingDestinationFeedbackStyleNone & custom drop highlight

For NSTableViewDraggingDestinationFeedbackStyleNone, the Apple docs state:

"This option exists to allow subclasses to implement their dragging destination highlighting...."

There's no hint of how this can be accomplished however, and from discussions I've seen going back to 2008 it seems that Apple is unwilling to make the necessary APIs public for use in said subclasses; are there any examples out there of how to make a custom drop highlight?
