Arrgh IB constraints

Is there anything that describes how I'm supposed to use IB to set layout constraints? It keeps putting stuff in there, and then not behaving properly at run time. I can't delete half the constraints until I add other ones, and even then it adds constraints that don't need to be there.

I almost always want to mimic the old behavior, of fixed margins and flexible growth for a view, but that seems very hard to do.
