When you have alpha transparency you can either blend the aerial tiles into the map view or blend the entire map view into the aerial tiles.  Either way, I think, you can get something that looks good.  Semitransparent overlays consisted of aerial tiles might actually work, and it is in the same direction as my original recommendation.
