It’s an entry in the Info.plist that registers an app persistently as a handler for a URL scheme. Does your helper app have that entry?

(It may be possible to register an app using code too, but the code snippet you gave is just for installing an AppleEvent handler in your process at runtime and has nothing to do with Launch Services registration.)
