You are right. I replaced:
 [ self makeNewDocument] with:
[ self performSelectorOnMainThread: @selector(makeNewDocument)  withObject: nil  waitUntilDone: NO ];
and all is fine.

And indeed:
NSLog(@"%s isMainThread %u",__FUNCTION__, [NSThread  isMainThread]);	// prints 0
