It's a sledgehammer to crack a nut. I really dislike a complicated solution when a simple one will do. In this case, the correct, best and simplest solution is a media access API to allow third-party developers the same privileges as Apple's own apps.

Perhaps, but that's what the iMedia Browser does (did?) and I used elements of that code.
