If "Auto Rearrange Content" is switched on, the array controller is observing the objects in its content for the keypaths of the filterpredicate and sortdescriptors. The value of key "personalNames" of keypath "personalNames.value.gedcomString" is an array and can't be observed for key "value". What happens if you switch "Auto Rearrange Content" off?
