The point remains that there are quite powerful extensions to the formal regular-expression syntax that are reliable, in almost universal use, and helpful to the OP. In your heart of hearts, you will admit to knowing that.
In the '80s, I called myself a "hacker," and even had a vanity license plate MAC HAKR. The battle over the popular meaning of "hacker" has been lost, and so it has been with "regular expression."
