One thing I would suggest trying is ordering the window out instead of closing it. There is a difference - if the window is ordered out, it will disappear from the screen, but the window and its views will still be known by the window server. I haven't tried it, but based on my previous experience with IKImageBrowserView, the WebView ought to carry on as if nothing happened…
