Do you mean forward/backward vis a vis application versions, or vis a vis OS versions/platforms? The former is fairly easy--I would have one element of stored data be a version identifier (either app version or file format version, however you prefer) so you app knows what to expect. The latter is fairly transparent as long as you plan for 32/64 bitness.

Or do you mean something else?
