Thanks David!
This was an unexpectedly good idea... works really well. I would never have thought of it, thinking of CAReplicatorLayer slightly differently (and CATiledLayer differently too, as it turns out - using that approach was a disappointment).
I need to refine it quite a bit, but the early results look very promising.
