This sounds familiar. I remember something wasn't working in a view-based table and I was baffled until I read somewhere that I needed to set its delegate. Usually I make a note to myself about stuff like this, but I can't find the exact link that led me to this discovery. Perhaps one of these:

<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12266701/how-to-trigger-an-action-from-a-nstablecellview-in-view-based-nstableview-when-u>

<http://forums.bignerdranch.com/viewtopic.php?f=183&t=3896>

It may be worth filing a documentation bug if not an actual API bug.
