The docs for NSTableCellView pretty clearly enumerate the other features that make it advantageous:

* Automatic support for drag image flocking via the imageView and textField outlet

* Manual support for drag image flocking via the draggingImageComponents property

* Automatic management of appearance via the rowSizeStyle and backgroundStyle properties
