Yup. It took Sony at least two months to get their Playstation Network (PSN) back online after it was hacked a few years ago.
One of the most annoying personality traits engineers have is the belief that they can intuitively understand and diagnose complicated systems they know nothing about. This leads to the belief that any problem you haven’t directly worked on is “trivial” and, if it isn’t immediately solved, the people working on it must be stupid or incompetent. (Conversely, any problem you have personally worked on is “really complicated” and you couldn’t even begin to convey how nasty the problems are.)
How many of you who are complaining have a strong grasp of security engineering practices and digital forensics, or have worked on upgrading huge customer-facing online systems?
