Ha! Tell that to Apple. There is more than one Apple support note where one of the troubleshooting steps is to trash your preferences. An example off the top of my head:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3893?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

In this case it is such a common thing to do that there is a third party application to save, trash, and restore those specific preferences for you.
