I would suggest to duplicate your existing nib and *remove* items from each. This will probably be less re-wiring than re-creating one or both from scratch. Both nibs will probably keep all the controllers they have now, unless some controllers end up with no connections.
I recently endured the pain of splitting a nib which had grown too large into four smaller nibs. It was tedious to get everything reconnected, although more so in my case since I was also splitting three view controllers off from the original, huge window controller.
