I find embedding a picker (date or other) as a dynamically expanding row in a table is a much much better way of presentation than showing it as a secondary overlay or alert style or pushed-in/out dialog-thing. You can see how that works in the Calendar app when adding an event (start/end date). I realize that works only if you have a table you present your data in.

Generally I would recommend to give yourself time to let it sink in a little. Some things are pretty nice and overall I find it's great for smaller teams because there is less need for elaborate graphics, backgrounds, gazillions of supporting images and so forth.
